  • An update on our midwife, Carrie Sizer

An update on our midwife, Carrie Sizer

We have some difficult news to share with our Vernon Midwifery family and those who have come to know and love our midwife, Carrie Sizer.

Carrie has been diagnosed with a Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), which presents with symptoms similar to a stroke. This has impacted her ability to work and be present with patients as she normally would.

Carrie is currently staying at the rehabilitation unit at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, where she is receiving the professional care and support she needs. She has expressed deep gratitude for the many messages and kind words sent her way. While she does not have the energy to reply, please know your compassion is felt and appreciated.

At this time, Vernon Midwifery is not offering midwifery care. We are actively working on a transition plan and hope to resume service in a timely fashion. We will continue to keep this website updated as we know more.

Thank you for your patience and continued support. Please join us in sending love, strength, and healing to Carrie and her family.

  • Celebrating International Day of the Midwife

Celebrating International Day of the Midwife

May 5th is International Day of the Midwife, a global celebration of the essential care midwives provide to families around the world. Established in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives, this annual day of recognition raises awareness of the midwifery profession and the life-changing support midwives offer during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

At Vernon Midwifery, we’re proud to stand alongside midwives across more than 50 countries in honoring this meaningful day. Midwives are primary care providers for pregnant clients and newborns, delivering care rooted in informed choice, continuity of care, and evidence-based practice.

This year, we take a moment to celebrate our community of midwives past and present. From founding midwife Sylvia Nicholson, to current midwife Carrie Sizer, and everyone who has worked in our clinic or trained here, we are so grateful for the passion, skill, and dedication that define this work.

To everyone who supports midwifery care, whether as a practitioner, student, partner, or parent: thank you. Your belief in family-centered, respectful, and inclusive care helps ensure future generations continue to have access to the midwifery model of care.

Happy International Day of the Midwife!

  • Vernon midwives Meghan and Carrie are now certified lactation consultants!

Vernon midwives Meghan and Carrie are now certified lactation consultants!

Our midwives Meghan Price and Carrie Sizer set themselves a big goal: to become certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). That meant 95 hours of coursework, a trip to Vancouver, and a challenging 4-hour exam. All on top of their midwifery work and family life!

After months of hard work and a long wait for results, they both passed!

We’re incredibly proud to share this milestone. Becoming IBCLCs expands the support Vernon Midwifery can offer families, especially when it comes to infant feeding. Whether it’s establishing breastfeeding, addressing challenges, or exploring feeding options that work best for each family, we’re here with expert, compassionate care.

More details about our lactation support services are coming soon. For now, we’re celebrating this big achievement and the dedication that made it possible.

    Congratulations Carrie and Meghan!

  • Vernon Midwifery moves to the Alpine Centre

Vernon Midwifery moves to the Alpine Centre

In January 2017, Vernon Midwifery opened its doors at a brand new location in the Alpine Centre, marking an exciting milestone for the practice and for midwifery care in the North Okanagan.

After outgrowing its original space on the main floor of Sylvia Nicholson’s East Hill home, the clinic found a new home just off Kalamalka Lake Road. The new location offers improved access, professional amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere for clients. The thoughtfully designed space was made possible through the hard work of Carrie Sizer, RM, who had recently arrived in Vernon from the UK to join Sylvia in practice.

Carrie’s vision for a warm, inclusive clinic environment came to life at the Alpine Centre, where families now enjoy a calm and comfortable space for prenatal visits and postpartum check-ins. With artwork by Otylia Photography on the walls and a cozy waiting area, the new clinic feels like home while offering the convenience of a central location and private exam rooms.

Midwives Carrie Sizer and Sylvia Nicholson offer full-scope midwifery care from this new clinic, including prenatal visits, birth support at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, and postpartum care for birthing parents and newborns. As always, care was fully covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP), with private pay options available for those without MSP coverage.

The move to the Alpine Centre was more than just a change of address, it is a meaningful investment in accessible, community-based care for local families. Vernon Midwifery continues to be proud of its roots and grateful to the families who have made the journey with us.

Here are some photos of the new clinic at the Alpine Centre taken by the wonderful Otylia Photography:
