In British Columbia, registered midwives are licensed primary care providers who support healthy pregnancies, births, and postpartum recovery. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to access care. From your first positive test through to six weeks after your baby is born, your midwife can be your main care provider for everything related to pregnancy and birth.
Midwives provide government-funded, evidence-based care that’s centered on your values, your health, and your vision for birth. You’ll have longer appointments, 24/7 on-call support, and access to all standard tests and prescriptions. If complications arise, midwives consult and collaborate with specialist physicians to ensure safe, continuous care.

Types of Care Available
At Vernon Midwifery, Registered Midwife Carrie Sizer offers two types of care: full midwifery care and standalone postpartum-only care.
Full midwifery care
Full midwifery care provides continuous, personalized support from early pregnancy through birth and into the postpartum period. This full-scope care includes regular prenatal visits, support during labor and delivery at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, and follow-up care for six weeks after your baby is born.
Appointments are longer than typical medical visits, giving you time to ask questions, plan for your birth, and build a trusting relationship with your midwife. You’ll have 24/7 access for urgent concerns, and all standard tests, screenings, and prescriptions are included. Care is tailored to your preferences and fully covered by MSP for eligible BC residents.
Postpartum-only care
Postpartum-only care is available for families who gave birth with a doctor, OB, or other provider but would like support in the early weeks after delivery. You do not need to have received prenatal care from a midwife to access this service.
Postpartum care includes home or clinic visits, feeding and lactation support, newborn health checks, and emotional wellness screening. You’ll also have access to on-call support for urgent concerns during this six-week period. This care is fully covered by MSP for eligible BC residents, with private options available for those without coverage.

Service coverage
Care with Vernon Midwifery is fully covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) for eligible residents. Private care is available for those without MSP coverage.
