May 5th is International Day of the Midwife, a global celebration of the essential care midwives provide to families around the world. Established in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives, this annual day of recognition raises awareness of the midwifery profession and the life-changing support midwives offer during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
At Vernon Midwifery, we’re proud to stand alongside midwives across more than 50 countries in honoring this meaningful day. Midwives are primary care providers for pregnant clients and newborns, delivering care rooted in informed choice, continuity of care, and evidence-based practice.
This year, we take a moment to celebrate our community of midwives past and present. From founding midwife Sylvia Nicholson, to current midwife Carrie Sizer, and everyone who has worked in our clinic or trained here, we are so grateful for the passion, skill, and dedication that define this work.
To everyone who supports midwifery care, whether as a practitioner, student, partner, or parent: thank you. Your belief in family-centered, respectful, and inclusive care helps ensure future generations continue to have access to the midwifery model of care.
Happy International Day of the Midwife!
